ASU + GSV Coda: Legendary Coach Lou Holtz Outlines Trail to Life Success

Legendary Notre Dame Football Coach Lou Holtz gave the summit’s closing address in which he outlined key points for life success.

  1. Attitude is everything so have a good one. That means: Believe in yourself. Be happy with the opportunities you’re given. If you’re happy, people want to be around you. Don’t let other people’s comments control your attitude.

  2. Have a passion to win. We seem to be an “excuse” nation. Yet we can’t succeed if we’re looking for all the reasons why we can’t. How much sacrifice are you willing to make in order to be successful?

  3. Be a dreamer. Martin Luther King Jr. gave one of the greatest speeches in the history of mankind when he said “I have a dream.” Yet the more successful you are, the more you want to maintain your position. You’ll never come up with a new idea that way, and life becomes very boring. When you’re successful, dream bigger, he urged.

  4. Focus on your purpose. In this case, your purpose is to educate and prepare children for life, and to operate within a budget.

  5. Make good choices. Three laws to follow here: One, do what’s right – and it’s not right to be bitter. Two, do everything to the very best of your ability; your obligation is not to be well liked. Three, show other people that you genuinely care.

In the end, he said, there are three questions people will always ask about you: Can I trust you? Are you committed to excellence?  Do you care about others and the organization?
